In the UK, Aareon is among the market leaders in software for social housing organisations for nearly twenty years. In use at more than 100 customer sites, the latest release of their housing management system was QL Version 4, a traditional client-server software solution developed in VB.NET. Aareon was in the middle of a full rewrite of their software as a browser solution when government regulations forced social housing providers to implement a cloud-first strategy. To be able to compete and remain in business, they now needed to pivot immediately and, under enormous time pressure, quickly convert their software to a cloud solution. With a Web Enabling project by fecher, this goal was achieved with only 10.000 working hours and a timeframe of just 18 months instead of the estimated 10.000 days they had been facing for a full rewrite.

The modern cloud solution is based on Microsoft Dynamics CRM online and replaces the legacy desktop solution that was used previously. The 6-month implementation project began with the importing of around 90,000 mailing addresses and BDU member contacts. The final milestone was successfully concluded with the implementation of a module for event management and implementation of the software.
By using fecher's expanded Microsoft Dynamics CRM, we had - from the very start - a framework of necessary functions that could be continuously improved using our staff's practical know how.

The Bielefeld-based software company bpi solutions focuses on the creation of business management solutions. The development team was beset by difficult challenges with regard to the redevelopment of the application "bpi Publisher". bpi Publisher is a publication system for the creation of print publications and electronic catalogs that is often used by furniture manufacturers. Most of the modules in the new version were developed on the basis of the "bpi Sales Performer" application, which the consulting and software company fecher had already ported from Gupta to .NET in a separate project. Publisher however was still missing a customized text editor that would enable the management of product names, descriptions and prices in various languages. bpi solutions decided to have this model created externally as it would accelerate the project's momentum. They selected fecher to handle this task. fecher's team in Romania developed this model in around 25 project days. The project was coordinated from Germany. To prevent double entries and inconsistent translations, the newly created editor made it possible to check text modules for duplicates. It also enables the importing and exporting of texts to easily and seamlessly transfer translated text to the application.

Located in Pliezhausen (Germany), Datagroup, a software manufacturer focusing on public administration, developed customized Gupta software for an ecumenical social service in 1999. In a sub-area of the "Diakonisches Werk" (a service arm of German Lutheran Church) in Stuttgart, the organization handles projects in the areas of training, health, climate protection and human rights around the world. Without the business-critical specialized software for ecumenical social services, projects cannot be approved and disbursements cannot be made. Over time, the Gupta software became increasingly unable to meet the Diakonie organization's changed requirements, not to mention that it was nearly impossible to find programmers who could work with the old tools. For cost reasons, it was impossible for the organization to either consider reprogramming the specialized software consisting of thousands of projects or the time-consuming assembly of a standard application. Consequently, Datagroup brought the software and consulting company fecher on board as a specialist for software modernization. fecher transferred the software from Gupta to the .NET platform.

Execupay, a leading provider of software and technology to payroll service companies throughout the United States, worked with fecher to migrate the Execupay Payroll Suite (EPS) from Gupta SqlWindows to C#. fecher needed only a short 6 month porting cycle to return a new version of the comprehensive software solution based on the latest Microsoft .NET framework to Execupay in June 2011. After concluding the test phase and implementing some additional software refinement by their in house development team, Execupay expects the new EPS to arrive at the first client sites in fall 2011. Execupay Payroll Suite (EPS) was originally implemented in Gupta SqlWindows with the first version released in 1997. Over time, the program's set of modules grew to support all primary tasks associated with providing payroll services, from tracking time, printing checks, human resource management, reporting, tax and FICA compliance, to sales and service, as well as an online component. In the end, the code summed up to more than a million SAL code items and almost 200 different reports that needed to be converted to the new technology platform.
fecher gave us a fixed price and delivery date for our Porting Project that we could rely on; saving us a lot of time, money and risk.

Following the internal decision to globally focus the IT strategy on .NET, the porting performed by fecher from Gupta ensured that the application would be able to keep up technologically.

The classic Windows desktop solution from gibGREINER included more than 1.3 million lines of code written in C# on Microsoft .NET. The web front-end became necessary because gibGREINER wanted to offer its software as a real cloud solution in the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model.

Back in the 90s, the decision for VB6 seemed appropriate. However, with every new version of Windows, Microsoft put more emphasis on their .NET strategy and dropped the next bit of support for VB6. Rewriting our software from scratch was just too much of an effort – fecher has a well-established migration process that just worked for us!

From managing the State Forest to selling venison, the services of the "Landesbetrieb Hessen-Forst" (German State of Hessen, Agency for Forestry), with its 41 forestry offices and around 440 forest management areas, generates annual income of approx. EUR 200 million. To process its business operations, in addition to its own self-developed special applications for forestry, "Hessen-Forst" has utilized the State of Hesse's centralized SAP software for many years. Whereas they now only have to access a single centrally-managed Oracle database, this information was previously spread out across 94 local Gupta SQLBase databases. The databases were smoothly consolidated during a fecher migration project by using Oracle's Virtual Private Database function.
The simple fact that we can now operate around the clock without a maintenance window is a significant advantage for our business processes. The support that was needed over the years required considerable effort. That is no longer necessary, yet all of the data is still available in real time for the forestry offices and for evaluation purposes.

The Österreichische Wertpapierdaten Service GmbH (ÖWS, Austrian Securities Data Service) is the data hub with respect to securities for nearly every bank in Austria. ÖWS employees process around 300 inquiries from participant banks every day. These activities consist of the investment and changes in domestic and foreign securities as well as processing events relating to these financial instruments. Decisive weak points had been identified in the system whereby requirements had previously been transmitted by the banks via email to ÖWS: It was not possible to realize a comprehensive workflow between the participants via email alone. The work could only be divided amongst the various employees manually. As a result, it was difficult to implement a prioritization of the inquiries received. Queries could not be assigned to the relevant incidents and archiving could only be performed within the employee's personal email client. It was impossible to perform a variety of evaluations and consequently was utterly impossible to obtain an objective quality measurement. In a joint project with fecher, a solution involving an interbank workflow based on internet technology was designed. The application "FACE" (Financial-Instruments Administration Communication Environment) implements this workflow between the ÖWS and its clients. Incoming requests are sent to one of two teams, depending on the type of request. All requests that have not yet been assigned can be found in the respective team's inbox (Team Inbox Pool). From there, they are distributed. Every ÖWS employee always has an overview of the status of the requests to be personally processed (Personal Inbox Pool) and of the Team Inbox Pool. A bank can at all times call up the processing status of inquiries it has submitted. Banks can automatically obtain an email when a request has been completed. The software was realized as a multi-layer application based on Microsoft technologies such as ASP.NET. The requisite business logic resides on a central server, yet the software interface is available through a browser such as Internet Explorer. Using this method, it is not necessary for the user to install any software and new versions are simply made available. The application is run on an additional application server located in the computer center run by Raiffeisen Informatik (Austria's largest private computer center operator). Microsoft SQL server is used as the database server. Since the introduction of FACE, fecher is now also handling the ongoing maintenance and further development of the software. At a later date, using the same platform, fecher also developed the application eTOPIC for the ÖWS, which helps with the planning and documentation of meetings.
Due to the excellent cooperation and the efficiency of the tools used, our application FACE was realized - at an optimal cost-benefit ratio - to our utmost satisfaction.

Ramsauer & Stürmer, one of Europe's leading ERP providers, has been developing complex business software for small and medium-sized companies in all industry sectors since 1992. To ensure the ERP application rs2 always remains competitive, it undergoes continuous improvement and is adapted to the clients' needs. There are around 350 installations of rs2 in Austria alone. The 4gl platform on which it was based, Gupta Team Developer, was however increasingly less able to fulfill the Salzburg-based company's requirements. The company decided to port the application to the modern .NET platform as this would preserve the expertise gained from 150 people-years of development and simultaneously ensure the application's long-term further development. In a multi-year project, fecher used the tool-supported service "The Porting Project" to transfer the nearly two million lines of code comprising the Gupta application. It was not necessary to put a halt to the application's further development during this time. rs2 is comprised of software modules for the areas of accounting, materials management, production and customer relationship management as well as solutions for document and data management, business intelligence and individual workplaces and workflows. The new .NET version of rs2 is characterized, for example, by improved performance, an optimized GUI, and document management and workflow components that access the software directly.
Instead of scrapping everything and starting over, with porting, we were able to keep what was good and then use the new functions offered by .NET to simply supplement what was missing. We’d make exactly the same decision again, at any time.
